HISTORY Under the First Empire, court costumes, established by the decree of 29 Messidor Year XII (18 July 1804), returned to the pomp of the Ancien Régime.

From the time of his coronation, the Emperor had two official outfits: the "petit habillement", consisting of a short purple velvet suit and coat with gold embroidery, and the "grand habillement", designed by Isabey and Percier, in which we see him represented here. According to the decree, this "grand habillement" was to include: "breeches and stockings of white silk, white shoes embroidered with gold, tunic of white silk embroidered and adorned at the bottom with gold crepe, mantle falling over the shoulders and has breast and falling behind, of purple velvet sown with gold bees, embroidered around and lined with ermine, white gloves embroidered with gold, lace cravat, open gold crown formed of laurel leaves, gold sceptre and hand of justice, gold-handled sword enriched with diamonds attached to a white sash worn as a belt and adorned with gold sash[1].
