Francis PICABIA (1879-1953) Ink, watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower right 20 11/16 x 25 3/16 in
The work we are presenting today, «Les toreos», dates from 1927, when Picabia had just returned from a stay in Barcelona. The picture shows three bullfighters, apparently posing. They seem to have been sketched on the spot| the work is clean-lined, only leaving room for the figures, with a background left blank. The dominant colour is yellow: a sunny shade par excellence immediately conveying a warm, festive image of Spain to the viewer. Through this work, Picabia harks back to his Spanish origins. He was attached to his culture, and his bullfighters depict one of Spain's most symbolic festivities: the corrida. It features the splendid costumes, the only coloured element in the work, and the pride of the matadors, shown as a group of three, as dictated by custom.
