At the end of the 1960s, Fiat was entering its heyday. The 1960s saw some of the finest cars produced in terms of their design. Fiat left its mark on this period with some iconic cars, and especially the Dino. But the flowing lines and curves of the Sixties soon made way for the more angular lines which would herald a new decade. It was in this context that the Fiat 130 made its appearance in 1969, designed by the Boanos, father and son. Offered with two body styles, as a saloon and coupé, the Fiat 130 was the top of the Italian firm’s range. It was fitted with a V6 engine as Aurelio Lampredi wished, derived from the 128 Type A engine. Initially offered as a 2.8-litre unit, in 1971 it was rebored, the displacement increasing to 3235cc and maximum power to 165bhp at 5600rpm.
Available with manual or automatic transmission, the Fiat 130 was well equipped and strove to compete with the German saloons. Nearly all the 15,000 saloons built were sold in Italy and for a long time it was the only 6-cylinder Italian saloon.
The model we are presenting here is a true ‘garage find’ … After spending 25 years in a basement, this Fiat 130 Saloon has at last seen the light of day once again. Purchased new in France in 1973 by its current owner, the Italian saloon still has its original and only registration number, 46 QH 95. The whole family went on holiday in it for many years, while its owner used a Peugeot 205 GTI to go to the office each day. Used less and less as the years passed, the big saloon was laid up in the mid-1990s, emerging only when we arrived. As he didn’t know when he would next use the car, the owner took care to leave the automatic transmission in neutral and the handbrake off.
Both original keys have remained with the car, one in the ignition and one on the glovebox. The entire car is in good original condition, the engine turns over and the convenience features appear to work. A thorough mechanical service should, however, be carried out before the car goes properly back on the road.
Virtually impossible to find in France, this very well preserved example comes with its original certificate of conformity with the traditional red diagonal line and a file of invoices.
