In the mid-1960s, Ferrari needed a 2.0-litre production-based engine for the new Formula 2 and designed the mid-engined Dino to provide the necessary basis. Faced with the daunting task of building 500 units within the space of a year to meet the homologation requirements, Ferrari turned to FIAT for assistance. The resulting agreement for the latter to build the Dino's four-cam V6 engine led to an unusual spin-off model for FIAT. Launched in Pininfarina-bodied Spider form at the 1966 Turin Show, the FIAT Dino, equipped with the 2.0-litre, 160bhp V6, had a conventional front-engined layout and was notable as the first FIAT to employ four overhead camshafts and a limited-slip differential as standard. In 1969 the engine capacity was increased to 2,418cc for the ‘2400' model and a ZF gearbox and FIAT 130-type trailing-arm independent rear suspension adopted. The styling received a minor facelift. Certainly one of the most elegant means of transport for four passengers, the FIAT Dino 2400 accelerated to 100 KPH in around 8 seconds and could reach 210 KPH (130 MPH) while making all the right Ferrari-esque noises.
Our lovely Fiat Dino Spider has the larger 2.4 litre engine. The current owner acquired her in June 2009 and although the appearance of the car was good, he undertook a full restoration in order to bring the standard up to his required level. The engine was overhauled by V12 Automobiles at Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in the suburbs of Paris. The crankshaft was checked, new bearings, piston rings, timing chains and sprockets were fitted and new valve seats and guides were inserted into the cylinder head after it had been skimmed. The gearbox and clutch were also overhauled. The odometer reading is now 53 600 km and the car is in breath-taking condition. Th
