Tout comme Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam ou Le Van De, il fait partie de la toute première promotion de l’École des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine, fondée et dirigée par le peintre Victor Tardieu. Il participe à l’Exposition coloniale de 1931 et découvre alors la France où il s’installe définitivement dès 1937. Il lui faut attendre sa rencontre avec Jean-François Apesteguy, dans les environs de 1955, pour que ce dernier devienne son directeur artistique exclusif, et que la valorisation de son œuvre soit enfin effective. Mai Trung Thu conserve de tout temps toute son indépendance, et demeure inflexible et engagé dans sa peinture. Bien que fortement marqué par l’enseignement artistique qu’il reçoit de Tardieu, il garde cependant une identité vietnamienne profonde. Il abandonne alors rapidement la technique occidentale de l’huile sur toile et se consacre à la gouache et à l’encre sur soie, un procédé typiquement asiatique qui lui permet de développer un art riche en référence stylistique et en réminiscence de l’art chinois et vietnamien traditionnel. Ces compositions sont rigoureuses, en témoigne l’unité des couleurs, des formes, des lignes et de l’espace. L’artiste réalise des peintures sur pongé, tissu en soie léger et souple, par aplats et frottés de gouache, mais également des dessins et portraits exécutés au pastel ou mine de plomb. Essentiellement connu pour ses peintures d’enfants, réalisés pour l’UNICEF, ses thèmes favoris demeurent la femme, la famille entourant les ancêtres, et les compositions florales. En outre, Mai Trung Thu consacre une grande partie de son temps à la confection des encadrements pour ses œuvres car il ne conçoit pas une œuvre originale comme aboutie si elle n’est pas présentée dans  le cadre original qui lui correspond. Born in Vietnam in 1906, Mai Trung Thu studied at the French lycée in Hanoi.  Like Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam and Le Van De, he was one of the first intake of students at the Fine Arts School of Indochina, founded and directed by the painter Victor Tardieu. When he took part in the Colonial Exhibition of 1931, he discovered France, and moved there permanently in 1937. In around 1955 he met Jean-François Apesteguy, who became his exclusive artistic director and enabled the full worth of his work to be recognised at last. Mai Trung Thu always remained independent, adopting a committed, uncompromising attitude to his painting. Although strongly influenced by the artistic education he received from Tardieu, he preserved a profound Vietnamese identity. He rapidly abandoned the Western technique of oil on canvas to focus on gouache and ink on silk: a typically Asian technique that enabled him to develop an art imbued with stylistic references harking back to traditional Chinese and Vietnamese art. These compositions were rigorous in terms of unity of colour, form, line and space. For his paintings, the artist used pongee, a light, supple silk fabric ideal for flat tints or rubbed effects in gouache, as well as for drawings and portraits in pastel or graphite. While he was mainly known for his paintings of children for UNICEF, his favourite themes were women, the family surrounding ancestors, and floral compositions. In addition, Mai Trung Thu devoted much of his time to making frames for his works: he did not consider an original work complete unless it was presented in the original frame designed to set it off.
