Pupil of Lemot and David, second Prix de Rome in 1802, Bartolini received many imperial commissions among which a "colossal bronze hermes of the Emperor" erected on August 16, 1805 above the main door of the Napoleon museum (Height: 1,55 m. Paris, Louvre museum, inv.: MR3327). Bartolini represented Napoleon I in the antique style, in hermes, just crowned with a laurel wreath whose bands fall on the shoulders in a very refined style marked by a majestic serenity and a Jupiter-like face. Although the artist developed different versions of this imperial portrait, the bust we present here - with small variations - is linked to this first model of the artist distributed by the Carrarese workshops in the service of imperial propaganda. Importantly, it rests on its black marble sheath which adds to the magnificence of the model.
