The French 18th century is probably the period in the European decorative arts during which craftsmen showed the greatest imagination. Indeed, there was an exceptional renewal of forms and motifs and the invention of new models that had previously been absent from the aesthetic repertoire or almost never used.

In the field of watchmaking, particularly in the second half of the century, craftsmen showed a rare creativity to elaborate models of clocks with more and more accomplished compositions which most often contained movements elaborated by the best Parisian master watchmakers of the time. The "skeleton" type of clock was created in this particular context| it allowed the complexity of the mechanisms to be seen by the spectators and emphasized the elegance of the deliberately bare compositions, often consisting only of a frame supporting the dial or dials. For the most luxurious examples, these frames were covered with a more or less refined enamel decoration.
