During the Battle of Poitiers (19 September 1356), King John II the Good fought at the heart of the fray, surrounded by his sons. At his side, the young Philip the Bold, then aged 14, remained loyal to his father and warned him of enemy attacks. Tradition has it that he repeatedly called out to him: ‘Father, watch your right! Father, watch your left!’, a phrase that has come to symbolise his filial courage at the height of the battle.
