This fine-quality miniature has enabled us to shed light on its creator, who had remained unidentified until now: Victoire de Lascours. The wife of Jérôme Reynaud de Bologne, Baron de Lascours (1762–1835), a military officer and politician, she devoted herself passionately to the art of miniature painting. Her work as a miniaturist is documented in particular in the book published in 1882 entitled Souvenirs d’une amie sur la vie de Théodelinde Dubouché.

Etienne Jean Charles Champion de Nansouty, known as Stephen, the subject of our miniature, was the son of General-Count de Nantousy (1768–1815), who notably served as First Squire to the Emperor in 1808. Stephen, the second Count de Nantousy, pursued a political career and was created a Peer of France under Charles X.
