A rare, large polychrome wool and silk tapestry depicting ‘Alexander’s Entry into Babylon’, also known as ‘The Triumph of Alexander’, taken from the series on the History of Alexander based on Lebrun’s cartoons.
Brussels or the Royal Gobelins Manufactory, late 17th or early 18th century.

The original tapestry was delivered to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne de France between 17 November 1670 and 12 August 1676. A tapestry similar to ours, derived from this original piece, is held at the Mobilier National [No. GMTT81/5].
