Commissioned by Girolamo Vittrice for his private chapel at Santa Maria in Vallicella (Chiesa Nova) in Rome, the original work was painted by Caravaggio between 1600 and 1604. Seized by France in 1797, the work was returned in 1817 and is now part of the Vatican collections (inv. 40386).
