An object of great curiosity, the Æpyornis egg (also known as the elephant bird) comes from a giant bird, now extinct, endemic to Madagascar. The Madagascan equivalent of the famous Mauritian dodo, our rare bird belonged to the genus Aepyornis, and could grow up to 3 meters tall and weigh up to 500 kg. Its eggs, among the largest known in the world (around 30 cm long and with a volume of over 8 liters), are fascinating for their exceptional size and rarity, bearing witness to an island fauna that disappeared at the turn of the
17th and 18th centuries.
