TIBET 19th CENTURY
Pair of gilded repoussé copper-alloy snow lions (gangs seng ge), depicted standing with both forepaws in the air, holding swirling jewels, their mouths open, their fangs revealed, their tails bushy and their manes floating.
Dim. 56.5 x 45 cm

NOTE The snow lion is the legendary guardian animal of Tibet, also known as the "Land of the Snow Lion". In the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition, the snow lion is one of the four "dignities" associated with the Earth, embodying power, strength, courage and joy. Embossed plaques of this type were intended to adorn the base of certain stupas or thrones, or to protect the entrance to a temple or monastery.
