Back to auction

A crucifix made from a wooden cross (mahogany?) painted with the figure of the dead Christ, showing his five bleeding wounds and a halo, and surmounted by the titulus inscribed in the three languages as found in the Holy Scriptures.
Spain or Spanish colonies, 17th century.
Height: 83.5 cm – Width: 45.5 cm
(Set against a pink velvet backing; visible damage, losses and restoration work)

These painted crosses, objects of devotion that were once widespread in convents in Spain and Latin America during the 17th and 18th centuries, very rarely appear on the art market.
