SYSTEM SEAL
OF FRÈRE JEHAN PRUNET
The matrix in copper metal alloy
with a conical socket decorated
with six petals. The two-piece field
engraved with an Agnus Dei central shield
Dei at the heart of a trilobe with alternating points
mobile and bordered by a nominative legend
in orle: + S' FRISIOHIS x PRVNET in capital letters
between two fillets.
England, 14th century.
Diameter: 2.1 cm - Height 1.1 cm
(Good condition, upper removable ring missing)
This type of system die is rare and seems to be
characteristic of England. These
allow the use of a "small seal" without the legend
without the legend, as required. A
article entitled "Seal Matrices with Screw-out
Centers", published in 1924 in "The
Antiquaries Journal" is dedicated to this rare
type of seal. Hugh Sadler Kingsford, author of the
author of the article and a great connoisseur of
only eight complete examples, seven of which
of which seven are in silver. Our seal
seems to have been previously unpublished, which
a valuable discovery.
