Estimate3 000 - 5 000
Back to auction

featuring, on the left-hand side, a labyrinth of various two-tone interlacing patterns. On the right, an arched panel depicts a bird perched on the sinuous branches of a fruit-bearing vine. Coloured tesserae on a background of beige tesserae.
Early Christian art, 4th century AD.
170 x 145 x 4 cm
(Re-set using lime mortar on an aluminium honeycomb backing)

– Formerly in the S. Dalati collection, Stuttgart (Germany).
– Private collection.

The two-tone interlacing patterns on the labyrinth laces bear a resemblance to numerous early Christian mosaics from the 4th and 5th centuries, such as the one currently housed in the Church of Saint Saturnin in Antony, which is thought to have originally come from a church in northern Syria.
