Provenance
- Collection Solange Miot, Belgium (annotation on back of frame)
- Sale, Maisons de famille - online auction : tableaux, mobilier &| objets d'art, Anténor, Brussels, October 1, 2024, lot 17 (titled La Calèche)
- Private collection, Belgium (acquired at previous sale)
Note
According to Madame Sustrac, "the annotation at the back of the frame 'Fêtes' led to the current title 'Fête campagnarde à la calèche', but this is clearly not a calèche but a chariot. Is it the chariot of Thespis? a procession? an exodus? an illustration of Apollinaire's poem "Les saltimbanques" or an interpretation of a procession towards a galant fête à la Watteau (the costumes suggest the 18th century)? However, these hypotheses are all aimed at the theatrical genre of painting so dear to the author. The brushwork is sufficiently vague to show that Jacob did not intend to highlight a specific genre. This indecision makes this gouache particularly rich and interesting, as it can be read in several concurrent ways, in keeping with the author's aesthetic: "art is doubt". The rhetoric of the gouache, by juxtaposing the different subjects without privileging any one, forces the viewer to choose or link the different poles of the narrative, and thus to identify a narrative framework. Note that none of them contradicts the other: the polysemy is therefore very rich and open. This gouache is therefore rare in the author's graphic work: it is an integral part of his poetic aesthetic, and should stand as an emblematic work of Jacob's graphic art".
