Mercedes-Benz 190 SL – 1959

French registration title
Sold without contrôle technique

This 190 SL joined Mr A’s collection on 13 April 1974. Spotted not far from his home at the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Rouen, located at 51 avenue du Mont Riboudet, the car was delivered new in France and in good working order at the time.
It is a May 1959 model, put on the road on 29 June of that year. According to our archives and the accompanying file, it remained in the Val-de-Marne until 4 May 1968 under registration number 9148 AL 94, before being registered in Seine-Saint-Denis until April 1973. It was at this point that it joined a certain Marcel Vasseur in Dieppe for just one year.
After several years of use, the car was finally immobilised in June 2017. All the technical inspections are on file and date back to 1995, when the car covered 21,456 km. The car has suffered the ravages of time, but it is complete, and its engine (matching) is not blocked. It still has its hard top, which has been welded to the body, as if driving in the open air wasn’t suitable for the Normandy region!
An intriguing detail is that the file contains several exchanges with Garage de l’Etoile, a well-known specialist for the brand in the Paris region, including a letter from its manager Jean-Marie Lebaron, who wanted to buy the model. Indeed, pre-1960 models that are originally French are favoured by enthusiasts.
Less exuberant than the 300 SL but no less refined, the 190 SL was a huge commercial success. Its high degree of refinement
and ease of driving contributed to record sales, particularly in the United States. Between 1955 and 1963, just under
26,000 examples were produced. To this day, the 190 SL remains a sought-after car, for its lines, reliability and safe handling.
