Two black and gold lacquered wood quadrille game boxes. Each housing four small boxes with engraved mother-of-pearl tokens of various shapes. The set is decorated in gold lacquer on a black background with lacustrine landscapes and motifs of bamboo and various flowers. The interior is lacquered in imitation of nashiji lacquer. The clasp is in the shape of a taijitu.

NOTE: The game of quadrille was extremely popular in France and Europe throughout the 18th century. A card game played by four players, it requires tokens for betting purposes. Mother-of-pearl cards and chips are stored in small boxes with four cassettes. The game's popularity led Europeans working for the East India companies in Canton to order quadrille games during the 18th century.
