CHINA LATE MING DYNASTY (1368-1644), 17th CENTURY
An important and rare blue-white porcelain covered vase of baluster form, the rounded body decorated with four large reserves depicting scenes with scholars in the mountains. The whole stands out against a background of dense spiral lotus scrolls.
H. tot. 42.5 cm
NOTE: This important covered vase is an interesting example of hybridization between the "kraak" porcelains of the late Ming dynasty and the style of the Transition period. It borrows from the "kraak" style the finesse of the porcelain and the compartmentalized decorations, while the Transition style expresses itself in the liveliness of the foliage and the depiction of narrative scenes.
