Black and gold lacquer hasami bako chest decorated with fruits and tachibana leaves among karakusa scrolls in maki-e gold lacquer on a ro-iro background. The ensemble is punctuated with "Taka no Hane" (hawk feathers) coats of arms. Gilt bronze fittings and spandrels chased with aoi leaves among foliage. Interior lined with paper.

NOTE: hasami-bako travel chests were traditionally part of the dowry of young women of the Japanese aristocracy. They could feature auspicious motifs for the young bride, such as the tachibana orange, a symbol of longevity and healthy offspring.
