2 volumes in-12, [6 (of 7)] f., 488 p. + [1] f., 466 p. red morocco, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with gilded stippling, author, title, tomaison and date gilded, ornate caissons, triple gilded fillet edging the boards, double gilded fillet at the edges, inner morocco border decorated with 5 gilded fillets, edges gilded [Kauffmann-Horclois] (small stains on a title page| 4 replaced leaves| 2 leaves lacking: 1f. liminaire au t.1 and errata f. on t.2).
First edition. The spelling of the text conforms to Voltaire's new spelling, with the change of "oi" to "ai", and capitals are only used at the beginning of paragraphs.
Washed and carefully set copy by Kauffmann-Horclois, with 4 browned leaves brought back from another copy and a different edition, but which may be cartons: t.I, p.213-4, 339-40, 415-418.
