Note
Pygmalion was a sculptor from Cyprus, descended from Athena and Hephaestus. Revolted against marriage by the reprehensible conduct of the Prophetides (women of Cyprus), he devoted himself to celibacy. However, he fell in love with an ivory statue, the work of his chisel. Obtaining Aphrodite's permission to bring the statue to life, he married her in the goddess' presence and, according to some versions, had two children by her: Paphos and Matharmé.
