According to Michel Massant, this work was created around 1923. The landscape in the background reminds him of a Japanese setting (print or panel). Indeed, according to Mr. Massant, Sauer frequented a Japanese objects store in Brussels at an early age, and this charcoal was "more than likely done in a studio".
