Note
"One fine day Guillaumin was able to free himself completely. Then, with a visible joy of exploration, of discovery, of work without concern for the passage of time, he set off towards the distant countryside, towards the great marine horizons, towards the rocks on the shores of the Ocean, from where you can see the waves breaking and the boats gliding by with their white inflated sails. It's at this point that he gives us his paintings of Saint-Palais, in the cheerful freshness of which his joy of free living and of painting is so clearly apparent. Between the rocks, all bathed in light, the sea, under the caress of the sun that illuminates it and makes it transparent, spreads out, according to the depths and lighting, the most sumptuous varieties of blue, from ultramarine to the most delicate golden blue-green. It was also at this time that Guillaumin discovered the beautiful patterns of Agay in the Var and the red jaggedness of the Estérel coastline. It didn't take long for him to move there regularly. And soon, at the end of each winter, he was bringing back these radiant paintings, so varied in their brilliance, which enchant us with harmonious symphonies where the green of the pines combines with the splendor of the gleaming rocks and the shimmer of the deep blue of the waves."
