"I have always known and loved Gustave Stoskopf's painting. Today, and I believe this to be true, it can be described as Expressionist, because it is. I admired the portraits, the extraordinary faces, but above all, and this is what has always fascinated me the most, the Hands."
Bernard Buffet

Note
"The man pictured was Charles Metzger, a resident of Brumath. He was Gustave Stoskopf's favorite model for many years. There are many portraits of this particularly expressive figure. Charles Metzger, who lived in Brumath in very modest circumstances, was happy to pose for an appropriate fee, but every year Gustave Stoskopf had to visit him, renew his request and ask his wife's permission in particular. According to a once-and-for-all ritual, the wife would give her approval, albeit not without reluctance, for new posing sessions."
