This composition is to be associated with another version of the portrait of Virginie de Sainte-Aldegonde, the whereabouts of which are unknown today. Originally, the little girl and her dog were set against a landscape background, as we know from a watercolor (Fig. 1) by Hermann Winterhalter, brother of Franz-Xaver, and an engraving by Alphonse Martinet (1821-1861).
