JEAN FRANÇOIS PIERRE PEYRON AIX-EN-PROVENCE, 1744 - 1814, PARIS
Marius prisoner at Minturnes
Pen, Indian ink and gray wash
Signed and dated lower left P. Peyron. inv.
and Del. in 1783
21 x 15 cm - 8 1/4 x 5 15/16 in.
(Peeling, slightly oiled)
Marius imprisoned at Minturnes, pen, black ink and gray wash, signed and dated lower left
PROVENANCE:
Private collection, France.
The upper part has been tiled.
Our drawing is a preparation for Peyron's piece d'agrément à l'Académie, exhibited at the
Salon in 1783 (no longer in existence). There is another drawing with important variants, preserved in the
Bibliothèque Nationale de Madrid (see Pierre Rosenberg and Udolpho van de Sandt, Pierre Peyron, Neuilly, 1983, ed.Arthena, n°100-101, the drawing reproduced in figure 88). The way it has been squared suggests that it may be a preparatory drawing for the final composition.
