et fils. Rectangular snuffbox in yellow gold,
chased, guilloché, framed with friezes
friezes of foliate scrolls and blue-enameled fillets.
the lid is adorned with an oval miniature
representing the portrait of Jérôme Bonaparte
of Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia and brother
of Napoleon I. He is wearing a large uniform
and wears the medal and plaque
of the Legion of Honor. The snuffbox opens
in the direction of the miniature.
Engraved on the throat in cursive calligraphy:
" N°76. Etienne Nitot et Fils Jouailliers
Bijoutiers de leurs Majestés le Roi et la Reine
de Westphalie à Paris.
Master goldsmith's hallmark: Etienne Lucien
Blerzy (inscribed 1801-1802, crossed out
in 1808). Rooster head guarantee hallmark
(Paris, 1798/1809).
And baby's head hallmark, 2nd Paris title.
Number 43 stamped on the throat.
First Empire period, circa 1807-1808.

(Very good overall condition, small enamel chips).
It is quite likely that the miniature
adorning this snuffbox is the work of Louis
François Aubry (1767-1851), who we know supplied
that he supplied Nitot from the archives, and of whom
several other portraits of Jérôme Bonaparte
