RARE CHANCELLERY
WITH THE COAT OF ARMS OF ANNE D'AUTRICHE
Polychrome wool and silk tapestry
representing the coat of arms of Anne of Austria,
Queen of France (part of France
and Austria), under a royal crown of France
of France and surrounded by a widow's cordelière
and surrounded by a widow's cord, all in a reserve
a circular wreath of laurels
au naturel, rose-trimmed and borne
by two slender angels standing on a terrace
on a terrace of grass and flowers
au naturel. The entire background field is
of golden fleur-de-lys on an azure background.
Manufacture des Gobelins or de Beauvais,
17th century, between 1643 and 1651.
Height: 238 cm - Width: 255 cm
(Restorations, missing parts including border,
beautiful polychromy, lined)
PROVENANCE
- Jacques Guerlain Collection (1874-1963).
- Remained in the previous owner's family to this day.
to this day.
Chancelleries are a type of tapestry
which takes its name from the custom of the reigning
to provide his chancellors with a dyeing cloth
with the emblems of his power. The
tapestry we are presenting is a rare gem
as it is clearly from the Regency of Anne of Austria
of Austria, a short period in French history
between 1643 and 1651, and appears to be the only
the only known chancellery.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs conserves a
chancellery bearing the arms of Louis XIV, woven around
1680 for the chancellor Le Tellier [N°
Inv. CAM 45] and the Musée du Louvre has a very similar
a very similar chancellery with the same arms
woven around 1685 for the chancellor
Boucherat [N°OA 5703].
Our tapestry is based on the same carton
(with the exception of the coat of arms) as the chancellery
exhibited on the ceiling of the Salle des Curiosités in the
of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris, bequeathed
bequeathed by Baroness Salomon de Rothschild
in 1922 [Fondation des Artistes, inv. no. MOA078].
