FOLLOWER OF ANTONIO SUSINI
(1572-1624)
Lion devouring a horse
Bronze with shaded patina (repatinated)
Italy, 17th century.
Height: 22.5 cm - Width: 32 cm
Depth: 21 cm
(Repatinated later, restorations)
On a chased gilt bronze base from the late
late 18th or early 19th century.

This group is directly inspired by the
marble in the Palazzo dei Conservatori,
in Rome. The latter was discovered in 1347
only the horse's torso and the upper part of the
of the lion were intact.
Several examples of this bronze
of this bronze, which appears to be a counterpart
of the "Lion devouring a bull".
Art historians agree that these models were
these models to Jean de Bologne.
There are two bronzes identical to ours
signed by Antonio Susini
(1572-1624). One is in the Corsini collection,
kept in Rome at the Museo di Palazzo Venezia
and the other at the Detroit Institute of Art
Museum [Accession Number: 25.20].
