Note
Marie Noël, nom de plume of Marie Rouget, born February 16, 1883 in Auxerre and died December 23, 1967 in the same town, was a French poetess, appreciated by Valéry, Montherlant and Aragon, and who received numerous distinctions during her lifetime. Marie Noël is best known for her poetic work based on traditional chanson, her short stories and her "Notes intimes", written in 1959. She corresponded with many of the intellectuals of her day. She was born into a practicing Catholic family, in a town shaken by anticlericalism and Jansenism. She rarely left her hometown or her parents' house, except during the Second World War. On December 23, 2017, the fiftieth anniversary of her death, her process for beatification as a Servant of God was opened.
