General DUJARD had him write a memoir requesting an officer's position to be chosen by the Convention| as General KELLERMANN had been called to the Army of the Alps, it is SCHERER who will support him... Hope of peace in Piedmont... Mantua 10 pluviose VI (January 29, 1798). Beautiful letter evoking a day in Venice, the entry of the Austrians into Verona, his lack of sympathy for the Italians, and the fate of the troops attached to the direction of the bridges.
"I am attached to the Cisalpine Republic. I tremble, but I hope that BONAPARTE's dispositions, whose children we are, will prevail"... Codogno 6 ventose VI (February 24, 1798), commentary on the "troubles" in Mantua: insurrection by French troops, deprived of their pay... Milan 20 thermidor VI (August 7, 1798). A general with the title of chief geographer ousted him by right, but the general head of the general staff created him head of his particular topographical office, under his orders and with the title of deputy to the general staff... Milan 25 ventose VII (March 15, 1799). Long letter on his months in Naples, in the land of the insurgents... Enchantment of 18 days in Rome...
