VERLAINE Paul (1844 - 1896) L.A.S. "PV", Tuesday, October 23 [1888, probably to Joris-Karl HUYSMANS]| 2 pages in-8 on squared paper (middle fold reinforced).
Beautiful letter from the rue Royer-Collard period, in which Léon Bloy and Huysmans come to the poet's aid.
"My dear friend, If my leg had allowed me in these abominable times, I would certainly have brought you a letter that my "poverty" (read misery) prevented me from franking. A sale of some poor books has emboldened me to this orgy on the very day I receive your kind missive.
If you could send me the 35 fr. in question by money order as soon as possible, it would do the trick for my feet, which are truly and justly disgraced in the eyes of my landlady by impossible socks and infamous "ripatons". And ideo, if possible, send it by money order as soon as you get this note. It wouldn't prevent me from having the greatest pleasure in seeing you on Wednesday at the time indicated (7), especially as I seem to be an ingrate, after all the excellent and kind services you and the good Bloy have rendered me [...].
Speaking of writing, M. l'abbé Dewez sent me a letter about Bloy that I didn't see fit to send to him, because it was so... stupid! And, appropriately enough, I didn't reply.
- I was offered a bed at the hospital in Aix-les-Bains. But it's the same old story! Trips and settling of scores with my landlady, who gives me a nose as long as that, and terrible speeches that I don't care about, but which end up ringing a wooden bell... temporary, terrible too! "What can I do? Ah, let it be!" Broussais would be there, in a pinch!"...
He gives his address: "14 r. Royer-Collard".
