SWINBURNE Algernon Charles (1837 - 1909) L.A.S., London April 29, 1870, to Victor HUGO| 2 pages in-8| in French.
Beautiful letter of literary and political admiration for Victor Hugo.
"My dear and great master Every time I receive a word from your hand it is for me an occasion of happiness and pride.
It was with great pleasure that I learned that my imperfect and truncated study on L'Homme qui rit had found favor in your eyes, and that I reread my few sentences on the subject in the columns of Le Rappel. I would have liked to do more and better, but time was short. I believe I have translated the poem I was honoured to be entrusted with fairly faithfully| but one of the most beautiful lines is "missed" in my translation, because the English language unfortunately has no equivalent for the delicious word effleurer.
I'm currently finishing a volume of Republican poetry, some of which I believe will be reproduced in Le Rappel.
It's difficult, and above all audacious, to attempt this steep and sublime path after you| but perhaps you'll find in it, by having me translated by a friendly voice, some traces of the studies my childhood imbibed. I hope that one day you will allow me to thank you in person for all you have done for me, and for the world.
