COCTEAU Jean (1889 - 1963) L.A. signed with a star, [19 ? April1940], to Jean MARAIS| 1 page small in-fol. torn from a drawing pad.
A feverish letter on the eve of a premiere.
[The letter was probably written on the evening of the dress rehearsal or on the eve of the premiere, on April 20, 1940 at the Bouffes-Parisiens theater, of two Cocteau plays: Le Bel Indifférent, a one-act play (monologue) starring Édith PIAF and Paul Meurisse, and Les
Monstres sacrés with Yvonne de Bray and Madeleine Robinson| sets by Christian Bérard]. "Mon bon ange Je rentre crevé. [...] Terrible day with grotesque stagehands. Unfinished set - Baby mad with despair etc... Robinson was not good tonight and prevented Yvonne's play - she made the play and the role incomprehensible.
I hope for a miracle tomorrow. Piaf and Meurisse are prodigious - but all the noises and lights still need to be sorted out.
The end of the act is bad. I've got to come up with a stroke of genius tomorrow. Otherwise it'll fall flat, which is a pity given the total effect"... He's dying of fear for his mobilized Jeannot: "Toi-toi-toi - just you and you playing with Piaf - that's my dream. Bless you. Say a prayer that the miracle will happen tomorrow".
