DALI. ALLEAU (René), dir Alchimie des philosophes.
Paris, Art et Valeur, 1976. Very strong in-plane slipcase, (by Odine, Paris), covered in fawn basane (83 x 64 x 20 cm), composed of 2 parts joined by a metal hinge, the movable side covered in white vellum, with 4 nerves and title pieces, evoking the spine of two volumes of a book| the upper cover is decorated with a large piece of parchment on which are printed circular esoteric figures, based on Raymond Lulle's Combinatory Wheels| in the middle is a movable Plexiglas disk (the disk is broken and incomplete of its upper part with inclusions| the basane is generally rubbed and the handles are worn).
Spectacular work and one of the most original illustrated by
Salvador Dali.
It consists of two volumes of text in-folio sheets (56 x 38 cm.) in pearl-gray cloth jacket, offering alchemical texts published according to ancient editions and manuscripts, some translated, some in facsimile| as well as a booklet explaining the work, in-4 sheets.
The illustration consists of 10 large color plates by Dali, printed on vellum, each approx.
77 x 57 cm. and numbered. They combine the techniques of intaglio engraving, lithography and silkscreen for the highlights. Each plate is housed in an individual slipcase with a title tab (title labels missing).
All plates are signed by the painter, some before the highlights. Dali also composed 6 drawings reproduced in silkscreen in the text.
Limited edition of 275 copies on Richard de Bas handmade paper, signed by Dali: one of the 225 (no. 92) includes the texts in English and French (the other 50 contain the texts in Italian and French). It contains a plate that is not included with all copies, an original composition in relief paper pulp with mineral inclusions, by Marius Péraudeau (75.5 x 55 cm.| it has 2 small losses, at a corner and at the head, and a broken corner held in place by adhesive tape).
