ZOLA (Émile) / La débâcle.
Paris, Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1892. Fort in-12, [2] f., 636 p., red morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, author, title, place and date in silver, double silver fillet at the edges, black morocco lining, double garnet moiré satin and marbled paper endpapers, gilt head, covers preserved [Noulhac] (very slight rubbing on the nerves and corners, silver faded to almost black).
First edition of the nineteenth volume in the Rougon-Macquart series. One of 330 numbered copies on Hollande (no. 13), the only large paper after 5 peau de velin and 33 japon.
An exceptional copy, bound with its large witnesses, bringing its dimensions, including the binding, to 19.5 x 16 cm. It is enhanced by 35 original drawings by Victor Oscar Guétin (1872-1916), a promising French painter who won the Prix de Rome in 1902 and died prematurely during the Great War. These drawings are generally signed with his monogram, done in the margins, on the witnesses, and one in the frontispiece, in ink and wash, and include ten in watercolor.
