In-8, red morocco, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with gilt stippling, authors, title and date gilt, compartments decorated with gilt and mosaic irons, double gilt fillet edging the boards, gilt fillet at the edges, morocco spine plate decorated with 3 fillets, a roulette and angular fleurons, all gilt, gilt edges on witnesses, matching slipcase [Pouillet] (slight rubbing to slipcase, a few freckles).
First edition and first print run of this work illustrated with 2 frontispieces, 48 plates and 150 vignettes in the text, all wood-engraved after compositions by Granville.
An exceptional copy, comprising:
- 1. six original pen-and-ink drawings by Grandville, used for the woodcuts, on pages 60, 69, 85, 117, 189 and 245.
- 2. eight woodblock fumés on China paper, p. 2, 4, 7, 12, 20, 23, 70, 78.
