Paris, Desray, 1801-1802. 2 volumes in-folio, long-grained Empire green morocco, spines with 5 ribbed boards decorated with a decorative gilt fillet, gilt title and tomaison, caissons decorated with a cold fleuron bordered by 4 gilt fillets, gilt roulette at head and tail, boards decorated with multiple framings of gilt fillets and cold roulettes, with gilt angular fleurons, guilloche corners and headpieces, inner roulette, untrimmed [H. Brod], slipcases (spine slightly faded, rubbing to corners, edges, boards and nerves, 1 corner of vol. 1 restored, inner hinges cracked but solid, sporadic foxing| 1 plate lacking).
A fine copy of one of the most beautiful ornithological works ever published in France.
The illustration consists of 190 copper-engraved plates (here 189), printed in color and colored.
Volume I consists of several parts, illustrated with 85 plates: the natural history of hummingbirds (plates 1 to 20), the natural history of hummingbirds (plates 21 to 64), the hummingbird supplement (plates 65 to 70), the natural history of jacamars (6 plates), and the natural history of promerops (9 plates). Total [2] f., 128-8-28 p.
The second volume consists of two parts illustrated with 105 plates (here 104): natural history of soui-mangas (88 plates out of 89, plate 78 missing| nos. 1-89 and 26 bis), natural history of birds of Paradise (16 plates). Total [2] f., 128-40 p. The edition was limited to 313 copies: in folio format, 212 copies on wove paper with captions printed in gold, including 12 deluxe copies printed entirely in gold| and one on vellum| and in-4°, 100 copies with captions in black.
This is one of 200 copies printed on wove paper, with the captions inscribed in gold. It has wide margins (h = 53 cm. excluding binding).
