Paris: Pierre Didot l'aîné, an IX - 1801. 3 vols. large in-folio, red morocco, spine with 6 raised bands, author, title, tomaison, place and date gilt, caissons decorated with small irons, boards decorated in the Duseuil style, all gilt, double fillet on the nerves, necks and headpieces, counterplates edged in morocco decorated with a roulette and gilt fillets, edges gilt on marbling, cases [Belz- Niedrée] (cases rubbed| superf. snag on the spine of t.2, slight rubbing to edges, nerves, lower spine of volume 3).
"Without question, this edition is one of the most magnificent books that the typography of any country has yet produced" (Brunet, IV, 1079).
The illustration consists of 57 copper-engraved plates by Langlois, Massard, Chatillon and others after Girodet, Gerard, Chaudet, Moite, Peyron... including a frontispiece engraved by Marais after Prudhon.
A very fine, wide-margined copy from an edition limited to 250 copies, this one no. 100, with the signature in black ink of P. Didot l'aîné on the justification bound in at the end of volume I.
