12 parts in 6 volumes in-folio, contemporary fawn basane with corners, smooth spine, green title-pieces and tomaison, gilt roulette, gilt fillet on spine and boards (rubbing with qq. losses, snag on upper head of vol.2, spine of same vol. slightly split at tail, corners dulled, very discreet marginal defects inside on qq. pages, including soiling and small tears, with very rare marks only in margins| soiling at end of vols. 4 and 5, condition report on request).
First French edition of one of the most spectacular and well-documented books published on fish. It is the major work of German physician and naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723-1799). Translation by Jean Charles Thie?bault de Laveaux, from the original German Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, published between 1785 and 1795. The address varies during the publication.
The illustrations comprise 432 engraved and colored plates.
The engravers Ludwig Schmidt, F. Berger, P. Haas and Moritz Bodenehr produced them from drawings by J. F. Hennig, Kru?ger Jumn, Printz Moritz and Pater Plumier. The title pages are illustrated with copper-engraved vignettes, most of them by D. Berger after F.C.W. Rosenberg.
The plates bear the name of the specimen represented in Latin, French, English and German.
A portrait of the author is included, flying, engraved by B. H. Bendix and B. Berger after the painter Graff (Berlin, 1794).
