Bouchard et Gravier, ex typographia Pauli Junchi, 1772-1780. 6 volumes large in-folio, recent binding, garnet half-chagrin with corners, spine with 7 nerves, gilt title and tomaison, edges formerly marbled [La Reliure moderne, Lyon] (frontispiece and 5 portraits in deficit| 1 f. limin. could be missing from t.5| spotting on text and qq. plates in vol.2, in margin at beginning of vol.3, more sustained and extensive in vol.4, sporadic browning and soiling).
Rare first edition of one of the most beautiful botanical books ever published in Italy. According to Nissen's prospectus, only 300 copies were produced, of which only a very small number were colored.
These 6 volumes feature 600 engraved and colored plates of plants and flowers. Excluding volumes 7 and 8, published respectively in 1784 and 1793, which are missing from most collections. Each title page printed in red and black is illustrated with a colored vignette.
A wide-margined copy (h = 54.5 cm. excluding binding).
Bonelli, a physician and professor of medicine in Rome, contributed only a short text following Tournefort's principles of plant identification in vol. I, the following volumes were composed by N. Martinelli (professor of botany in Rome), according to the Linnaean binomial system, based on texts and specimens supplied by Liberato and Constantino Sabbati.
