BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc de)| GUÉNEAU DE MONTBEILLARD (Philippe), BEXON (G.L.C.A) / Histoire naturelle des oiseaux.
Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1770-1786. 10 volumes large in-4, period half marbled basane, smooth spine, two red and green title-pieces, roulettes, and birds in fleurons, all gilt, small velvet corners, yellow edges speckled with red, head-caps and a snag on the spine of t.9 restored (3 head-caps worn, minor rubbing, scratches not serious on one cover| very rare snags in margins, foxing on qq. p. of text).
A fine copy of this remarkable work, a brilliant milestone in the history of ornithological books.
Buffon's text, supplemented by the work of his collaborators the ornithologist Guéneau de Monbeillard and the naturalist Abbé Bexon, is illustrated with 973 copper-engraved plates, mostly based on drawings by the painter François-Nicolas Martinet| they are finely colored, and framed with a yellow watercolor border. Some copies contain a further 30 or so insect plates, not included in this one.
This copy stands out for the generous size of its margins - the height of the leaves is around 33 cm. for the text, and between 32 and 33 cm. for the plates - and for the quality of the illustrations, which are particularly well-painted.
