[MORTUARY BINDING]. BUSSY-RABUTIN Histoire amoureuse des Gaules. P. M. De Bussy S[r?] de la Bastille.
S.l., s.n., [c. 1666]. In-12, [1] f. (illustrated engraved title), 258 p., red morocco, 5-ribbed spine, coffers edged with a double cold fillet, gilt title and fleurons, boards edged with a double cold fillet, decorated with a gilt fleuron with a skull and two shins repeated at the centers and spandrels, the center one framed with a large gilt iron, double gilt fillet at the edges, interior lace [Chambolle-Duru] (small tears at one head, spotting and spotting).
Extremely rare edition, described by Tchémerzine as "mediocre", which we cannot contradict. Nevertheless, although this copy is seriously wet, we have taken the trouble to cover it with a superb binding by Chambolle-Duru.
This edition is not included in the BnF online catalog, and we have not found a copy in the major public collections (CCFr, Wcat).
As for the curious mention following the author's name, "S. de la Bastille", which Tchémerzine considers to refer to the publisher, we believe it refers to the author's misfortunes, as he was imprisoned by order of the king from April 17, 1665 to May 17, 1666.
PROVENANCE
Baron L. C. A. Bonnefoy Du Charmel, 1873-1934 (engraved bookplate, with no. 201 inscribed by hand).
(Tchémerzine II, 158 b)
