Printed in Rouen, by L. Maurry, for Robert Balard... Paris, 1656. Small, narrow in-12 (106x54 mm.), [8] f. (including illustrated title), 507 p., [2] f. (privil.), red morocco, 5-rib spine decorated with gilt stippling, gilt title, place and date, small-ink ornamented compartments bordered by a double gilt fillet, boards bordered by a triple fillet and a line of stippling, with large angular irons and central medallion, all gilt, double gilt fillet at the edges, interior lace, gilt edges [Capé].
First edition in this pocket format, including all four books. It is illustrated with copper-engraved figures opposite each chapter, by François Campion and Jérome David, some anonymous| the typographed title also features an engraving.
A fine washed copy (an old ms. name still visible at the head of the title), carefully drawn up by Capé.

In-12, [2] f., LX-451 p., fr., pl., period green bronze morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt small irons and fillets, gilt title, triple gilt fillet on covers, interior roulette, gilt edges (flaws including 3 blunted corners, tear at edge of upper cover| russeting and a few stains).
The copper-engraved illustration consists of 1 frontispiece and 4 plates numbered 2 to 5, unsigned. These plates are copies of previous editions engraved by K. Audran, after L. Baugin for the frontispiece and plates I, III, IV| and by A. Bosse after Ph. de Champaigne, for book II.
