Two parts in one volume in-4, [6] f., 418 p., [6] f. (table)| [2] f., 181 p., [5] f. (table, bookseller's address), fig. 17th c. brown calf, 6-rib spine, gilt title, ornate caissons, triple gilt fillet around covers, gilt roulette at edges, marbled edges, restorations including upper jaws and corners (snagged tail cap, cracks on covers| title a little faded and rebacked, restored tear in margin M3, mq. in margin f.
Aaa4, digital traces and a few freckles in margins, rare pale halos).
First edition in French, "more sought-after than the Latin original" which appeared in Lyon the previous year| both editions are distinguished by the "fine execution of the woodcuts" (Brunet). The illustrations include over 400 woodcut figures of aquatic animals in the text, as well as a repeated portrait of the author attributed to Pierre Vase.
Translation by Laurent Joubert, who signs 8 verses on the effigy of M. Rondelet, p. [12]. Marked title, woodcut headbands, lettering and tailpieces. The care taken in the composition and printing of this work makes it one of the jewels of Lyon printing in the mid-sixteenth century.
