[16th CENTURY BOOK]. ARIOSTE (L')Orlando furioso... novissimamente alla sua integrita ridotto &| ornato di varie figure.
Con alcune stanze del signor Aluigi Gonzaga in lode del medesimo. Aggiuntovi per ciascun canto alcune allegorie et nel fine una breve espositione et tavola di tutto quello, che nell'opera si contiene. In Venetia, appresso Gabriel Gioli[to] di Ferrarii, 1544. In-4, 260-[26 (of 28)] f., havana calf, spine skilfully renewed in the taste of the period, with 6 nerves, mute, flowered boxes bordered by a double gilt fillet, boards decorated with a geometrical decoration composed of black wax listels bordered by gilt and interlaced fillets, the spaces decorated with gilt fleurons, and at the corners black wax fleurons with gilt borders| gilt lettering included in the decoration, on the upper board, the title, "Orlando furioso", and on the lower board, the name of the first owner, "Robertus Leo", decoration of gilt fillets and fleurons at the edges, gilt fillet bordering the back covers, gilt edges, corners restored (qq. negligible marginal soiling| 2 f. missing from last part).
Fine edition illustrated with 46 vignettes - one for each song - and as many initials, as well as a woodcut portrait in medallion on v° of f. 260. The title is typographed in a woodcut architectural frame with 2 allegorical figures and the printer's mark in the center| another version of this appears on v° of the last page.
Splendid binding with decoration typical of the Parisian workshops of the period, appreciated by the greatest bibliophiles. It appeared in the 1914 catalog of the Paris bookseller Théophile Belin (Livres des XVe et XVIe siècles, no. 14, reproduction pl. 38).
Sign. A-Z 8, AA-II 8, KK 4, *2-7 (of 8, mq. *1 and *8), 2*-6* 4. The two missing leaves are not part of the Orlando furioso but of the commentaries that follow.
Copy entirely ruled in red ink.
