[INCUNABLE]. [JODOCUS ERFORDENSIS] Vocabularius utriusque iuris.
Nuremberg, Koberger, 1481. In-folio, [110] (of 112) leaves, 55 lines on 2 columns, contemporary tan calf on wood, 4-nerved spine renewed in basane, modern red title-piece, boards decorated in cold with compartments separated by a triple fillet, the spaces filled with a set of floral irons, and at the head of the upper board, the title stamped "Vocabularius juris", remnants of clasps (spine renewed and much rubbed, headbands faded, one corner restored in basane| sporadic angular halo, discreet worm stain in margin of first on margins of first 7 f.| first and last (blank) leaves lacking).
A fine copy of this incunabula edition of the legal vocabulary written by the German jurist Jodocus of Erfurt, born around 1420.
After the colophon, it contains the passage beginning "Protestatur", which does not appear in all copies. It is distinguished by its meticulous decoration: initials painted in red or blue at the head of each alphabetical chapter| capitals highlighted in red throughout the text. Mention in colophon: "... pridie nonas septembris Antonii KoburgerNureinberge impensis impressus &| co[n]summatus Anno salutis MCCCCLXXXI".
Small punctures on the binding's boards suggest the presence of umbilicals and bolts that have now disappeared. Many old annotations and light underlining, quite rare.
PROVENANCE
Dr. Tinel, Rouen (etiq. 20th c. bookplate).
