The story of Rustam is recounted in the Sahnameh, part of Persian mythology. According to this epic tale, Rustam's mission was to save King Kavus, which led him to face many adventures. The dragon episode is one of the most famous. In this episode, the hero was asleep as a dragon approached. His faithful horse, Rakhsh, woke him up, but the dragon disappeared instantly. Rostam went back to sleep and his horse kept waking him up, while the dragon became invisible. Eventually, Rostam surprised the creature and managed to slice its head off with the stroke of his sword.
